April 1, 2011 Phillies 5, Astros 1

It looked like a team reunion of sorts on the Houston Astros roster today. In their starting lineup was former Phillie Michael Bourn along with former Red Soxers Bill Hall and Angel Sanchez. On the bench is former Phillie pinch-hitter extraordinairre (in my SOM play anyway) Jason Michaels. On the Astros pitching staff we have former Soxer Brandon Lyon, and former Phillies J. A. Happ, Nelson Figueroa and Brett Myers. To add to the mix, future Phillie Hunter Pence is on his pre-trade Astros, starting in right field.

As for the game itself, the afforementioned Myers and Roy Halladay treat the fans to a pitching duel, with the Phils busting open a 1-1 game in the 8th via four runs off of former Phillie Figueroa, who absorbs the loss. A 2-run double for Raul Ibanez and a 2-run single for Carlos Ruiz account for the four runs. For Ruiz, it caps a 3 for 3 day for the perfect 1.000 average on the early season so far.

April 1, 2011 Red Sox 7, Rangers 6

The Red Sox open the 2011 season in style with a come from behind win in Arlington. Carl Crawford drives in four teammates, but none are bigger than Dustin Pedroia's 2 RBI in the 9th when his double drives home JD Drew and Jacoby Ellsbury, both of whom singled off of Rangers stoper Netali Perez. Pedroia would come home on one of Crawford's RBI hits in that 9th.

The win is not without a scare though, as Papelbon pitches a rusty 9th despite striking out three. The play account for the 9th inning tells it all:

Carl Crawford went deep and had 4 RBI as the Boston Red Sox came back to win
one over Texas Rangers, 7 to 6.

Boston scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning with 3 runs on 4 base
hits. After an out was recorded, J.D. Drew initiated the scoring spurt when
he laced a base-hit. Jacoby Ellsbury stepped up next and he singled. Dustin
Pedroia then doubled. Crawford came up and he lined a single. After another
out, Adrian Gonzalez got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim.
Boston banged out 10 hits on the afternoon.

The win went to Daniel Bard(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings.
Bard was helped out by Jonathan Papelbon who recorded his 1st save. Neftali
Feliz(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief. He gave up 3 runs and 4 hits in 1
inning.

'Terry Francona was estatic following the game, 'You love stealing one on the
road like this. We just kept plugging away until we pulled it out!'
