April 18, 2011 Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 2 (12)




While catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia didn't get the start behind the plate, he plays hero in the end with a walk-off double in the bottom of the 12th inning in the annual Patriots Day game. Salts came into the game on defense after starting catcher Jason Varitek was pinch-ran for by Darnell McDonald in the 7th, and McDonald's extra speed enables him to score the tying run. Rhode Island native Dan Wheeler is in the right place in the right time for the win and his first in a Red Sox uniform.

The win puts the Red Sox to 11-4 and solo posession of first place in the AL East, while their division foes the Blue Jays drop their third straight with their 3-13 record being the worst record in the majors and their worst start to a year in team history.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia had 2 base hits as the Boston Red Sox defeated the
Toronto Blue Jays in 12 innings 3 to 2 at Fenway Park.
 
The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings.  Finally, Boston prevailed in
the 12th inning.  Kevin Youkilis drew a walk.  David Ortiz dug into the
batters box next, but he struck out.  Mike Cameron got his turn next, but he
was a strikeout victim.  Carl Crawford stepped in and he lined a single.
Saltalamacchia came to the plate and doubled resulting in an exciting win for
Boston and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans.  Boston
finished with 11 hits while Toronto ended up with 7.  
 
The winning pitcher was Dan Wheeler(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3
innings. Octavio Dotel(0-1) was charged with the loss in relief.  Despite
taking the loss, he whiffed 4 batters in 1 and 2/3 innings.

Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard go back-to-back in the 3rd inning, giving the Phils more than enough runs as they and Cole Hamels get the easy win and the series sweep of the Marlins. Still no errors yet this season through 14 games for the Phillies. After a bit more research, I found out that the 14 consecutive errorless games will be two shy of the NL record. St. Louis in 1992 had 16 straight errorless games, which was the major league record until the 2006 Red Sox bettered it with 17. That record only held three years until the 2009 Yankees had 18 straight. The Big Red Machine of 1975 had 15 straight, which was the major league record until the '92 Cards and the only teams ahead of the Phillies total.

Cole Hamels went 7 strong innings as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the
Florida Marlins by the score of 6 to 1 at Citizens Bank Park.
 
Hamels(2-1) had a strong outing.  He didn't give up much, just 2 hits and 2
walks in 7 innings.  Hamels whiffed an impressive total of 8 Florida batters
reducing his ERA from 4.15 to 3.15.  Neither team managed to score after the
4th inning.  
 
Anibal Sanchez(0-1) was the losing pitcher.  He was unable to control the
Philadelphia offense and allowed 8 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings.  
 
Wth the win Philadelphia now has a record of 9-5.  With the loss Florida now
has a record of 9-5.

April 17, 2011 Red Sox 8, Blue Jays 4




Toronto hurler Luis Perez gets a line that any starter could easily live with - 4 2/3 shutout innings only allowing two hits. Only problem for the Jays is that Perez came into the game in the 2nd inning in relief of starter Jesse Litsch after Litsch allows seven Sox runners to cross the plate. Three of the eight Red Sox runs are unearned with two of those coming as a direct result of an error, henceforth only 6 RBI with 8 runs. In all of the wildness, Jon Lester quietly goes to 3-0 on the year.

Added note about Luis Perez - on top of the 4 2/3 innings of relief today, he also went 2 1/3 innings allowing three runs in last game's slugfest for 7 innings overall and 124 pitches total in the two games. But then, with Toronto's starter unable to get out of the second inning two days in a row...

The Boston Red Sox readily handled Toronto Blue Jays by a score of 8 to 4 at
Fenway Park.
 
Boston had 5 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 2nd inning when they
had 6 base hits.  That early run support was enough for Jon Lester(3-0) and
Boston.  Overall Boston out-hit Toronto 12 to 3.  
 
Jesse Litsch(0-2) was the loser.  He gave up 7 runs in 1 and 2/3 innings and
saw his ERA jump from 2.08 to 4.91.

April 16, 2011 Red Sox 10, Blue Jays 3




The leadoff batter for each team gets a hit, with vastly different results. Yunel Escobar led off the game for the Jays with a single, but Josh Beckett retires the next 10 batters to face him until Adam Lind singles in the 4th. For the Sox, Jed Lowie led off their first inning with a solo homerun, and that opens the floodgates with Dustin Pedroia singling but geeting caught stealing second, Gonzo and Youk both walk, Big Papi singles to load the bases and Mike Cameron singles to the outfield with two crossing the plate. That would give Jays starter Jo-Jo Reyes the very early hook, but next pitcher Shawn Camp offers no relief as Jason Varitek rips a 3-run homerun with two of those runs charged to Reyes.

Six runs total score in the Sox first inning, and they are on cruise control from there. The win also ties the Sox with the Yankees at this very early juncture atop the AL East standings, both with 9-4 records. The Blue Jays drop to 3-11, the worst record in the majors and tying their 2004 team for the worst start in franchise history.

Jason Varitek hit a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Boston Red Sox topped the
Toronto Blue Jays by a score of 10 to 3 at Fenway Park.
 
Boston started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the
first when they scored 6 runs on 6 hits.  That was all Josh Beckett(2-0)
needed.  Boston had 16 hits for the game and Toronto had 9.  
 
Jo-Jo Reyes(0-3) was hit with the loss.  Wth the win Boston now has a record
of 9-4.  Toronto continued their losing ways and their record is now 3-11,
worst in the division.  They are 2-8 in their last ten games.

The Oakland A's lost today, only their second loss of the year and snapping a 12 game winning streak. Despite that hot 13-1 start, it isn't even the best start in A's history! Now we can have many ways of distinguishing the best start in history, but I would say that it would be the best team to a certain amount of losses. Basically, what would the best records be with a team with one loss, two losses, etc. The A's 13-1 start this SOM season would be the best start since the Giants back in 2003 started 13-1. Oakland has the best start with only one loss, back in 1981 the A's started 17-1. This list will be modern day teams, roughly since 1920.

The best would be as follows:

Undefeated:
13-0 for the 1982 Atlanta Braves and 1987 Milwaukee Brewers

One Loss:
17-1 for the 1987 Brewers and the 1981 Oakland A's
 
Two losses:
22-2 for the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers

Three losses:
22-3 for the 1955 Dodgers

Four losses:
26-4 for the 1984 Detroit Tigers

Five losses:
35-5 for the 1984 Tigers

The 1984 Tigers are widely regarded as having the best start in history with that 35-5 start, but like I said the best start can be figured out different ways. You could go on to six losses, seven, and on and on but that would't mean much by that point.

Roy Oswalt goes six solid innings for his first win of the season. A bit of lefty/righty swapping in the 7th and 8th, and Ryan Madson takes the 9th for his first save. Both Phillie runs came off the bat of Ross Gload, who with the Marlins infield playing in with runners on second and third pokes one over everybody with bot hrunners coming home and proving to be enough. The Marlins run came on a doubleplay, that is why they have no RBI.

Offense had not been the Phillies strong suit so far, as their team batting average of .226 is fourth worst in the majors. Why the 8-5 record? The pitching is A-number one in all of baseball, with the team ERA of 2.18 and opponents only batting .203 off them. As they say, pitching is everything. And BTW, still no errors for the team through 13 games.

Roy Oswalt(1-1) and Javier Vazquez(1-1) treated the Philadelphia fans to a
fine pitching duel at Citizens Bank Park.  The Philadelphia Phillies
eventually emerged as victors over the Florida Marlins by the score of 2 to
1.
 
Oswalt pitched well for Philadelphia in their victory.  He went 6 innings
surrendering 6 hits and 2 walks lowering his ERA from 3.46 to 2.84.  Florida
threatened in the 9th but Philadelphia was able to put down the rally.
 
Ryan Madson earned the save, his 1st.  When questioned about the loss, Jack
McKeon said, 'The fans got to see an exciting game out there tonight.
Unfortunately, we couldn't get it done this time.  Next time, though, we'll
be the clubhouse with all the smiles.'

April 15, 2011 Blue Jays 3, Red Sox 2




The Beantown bats are finally silenced by Jays hurler Brett Cecil, who loses the shutout when Jarrod Saltalamacchia homers in the 7th inning. The Sox threaten in the 9th when they load the bases with nobody out, down by two runs. The Jays play the infield back, and Marco Scutaro's grounder to short is played to a 6-4-3 doubleplay which does allow a run to score and narrow the gap to a run. But, next batter Jacoby Ellsbury flies out to end the game. Even with the Toronto win, their current 3-10 record ties the worst start in team history (1981 and 2004).

First baseman Adam Lind went yard and had 2 RBI as the Toronto Blue Jays
outscored the Boston Red Sox 3 to 2.
 
Toronto jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when they tallied 2
runs on 2 hits.  The crucial at-bat was provided by Lind who disappointed the
partisan crowd when he cracked a two-run shot.  Boston threatened in the 9th
but their rally came up short.  
 
Brett Cecil(1-0) allowed 1 run in 6 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Cecil got relief help from Casey Janssen who gained credit for his
1st save.  Clay Buchholz(1-2) was the losing pitcher.  
 
'It was a tough one to lose' said Terry Francona 'We'll get them next time
out.'

Cliff Lee has the Nats swingin' and missin' today, striking out 12 and coming within one of his career high for strikeouts as the Phillies take two of three from the Nationals. At least at this point those 12 K are one from a career high. In real life, three weeks from the date of this game on May 6, Lee will strike out 16 Braves for a career high but at this point his high is 13 which was set in 2010 in a start with Texas during his half season in Arlington.

Cliff Lee retired 12 batters on strikeouts at Nationals Park where the
Philadelphia Phillies beat the Washington Nationals 5 to 2.
 
Lee(1-1) contributed a very nicely pitched game.  He didn't allow much, just 5
hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.  Philadelphia had 9 hits for the night while
Washington had 5.  
 
Jose Contreras earned the save, his 1st.  Jordan Zimmermann(0-1) ended up with
the loss.  His ERA increased from 2.31 to 3.57 as he allowed 4 runs in 6
innings.  
 
Lee was asked about his big strikeout performance, 'Well, it's a little odd
when you rack up these numbers on the road - instead of cheers and a running
tally in the stands, everything gets real still and quiet.  Just strange -
but it's nice to be able to take the crowd out of the game.'

Two pitchers going in opposite directions take the hill today, Roy Halladay for the Phillies (2-0, 0.53 ERA) against the Nationals' John Lannan (0-2, 9.82). The game remains a tight 1-0 Phillie lead until Lannan is pinch hit for in the 6th, then the Phils open it up against the Nationals relievers. Not often you can see a pitchers ERA drop by almost four runs by allowing a run in 6 innings of work. Meanwhile, for Halladay he allows zero runs for the second straight start (he pitched a shutout his last time out) for the very impressive 0.36 ERA with only one run allowed through 25 innings of work so far.

The loss drops the Nationals to 3-8 for the year, but doing a bit of research shows that they have historically been slow starters in real life especially since moving to Washington. They started 2-9 in 2004 (while still in Montreal), 2006 and 2007, started 3-8 in 2008 and now in 2011, and 1-10 in 2009. That 1-10 ties the worst start in franchice history set back in 1970, the Expos second season.

April 12, 2011 Nationals 6, Phillies 5 (12)




After plenty of early scoring with the teams in a 5-5 tie after only 3 1/2 innings, the scoring stays quiet for the next 8 innings until the Nats 12th when Adam Laroche leads off with a walk pinch-hitting for the pitcher, and Nats leadoff hitter Ian Desmond rips one that rolls to the wall getting Laroche across the plate with the winning run off of David Herndon. Desmond gets credit for the walk-off triple. Not often you see 12 inning games played at a quick clip like this, only 3:06.

The loss knocks the Phils to 0-4 on the road now this year, but you can't blame the defense. So far through 10 games, not one Phillie fielder has committed an error. I would assume that 10 games into a season without an error has to be pretty close to a record. I couldn't find out what the record would be, but I did find out that the record overall is 18 straight errorless games for the 2009 Yankees.

tripled making Washington the victor and beginning a joyous home town

The winning pitcher was Brian Broderick(1-1) who allowed no runs in 2 innings.
David Herndon(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief.  He saw his ERA jump from
2.25 to 3.60 as gave up 1 run in 1 inning.

The power outage in Tampa continues as the Sox open a can of whip-ass on the Rays with an 8 run 5th inning against five pitchers to put the game away with ease in a surprisingly quick time of 2:26. Seven solid innings from Jon Lester puts him to 2-0 for the year.

Now here is a game you don't see very often. Every member of the Cardinals lineup gets at least one run, hit and RBI except for catcher Yadier Molina, who fell short on the RBI. Even pitcher Chris Carpenter got in on the action with 3 hits, 3 runs scored and 4 RBI as the Diamondbacks empty their bullpen. And pity poor Aaron Hielman, who faces seven batters and doesn't retire a single one with all seven scoring! That was during the Cards 6th inning, when already having a 7-1 lead they score 11 runs in the inning, all after the first two batters got out. 11 consecutive batters reached base with all 11 scoring before the third out was finally recorded.

Chris Carpenter whiffed 10 batters and first baseman Albert Pujols had 4 hits
and 4 RBI as the Arizona Diamondbacks were badly beaten by the St. Louis
Cardinals, 22 to 2.
 
Pujols provided much of the offense.  He smacked a single in the 1st inning,
doubled knocking in a run in the 6th inning, smashed a two-run homer in the
6th inning and laced a base-knock bringing in a run in the 7th inning.  St.
Louis kept the scorekeepers busy in the 6th inning which saw them plate 11
runs on 10 hits and the 7th inning which saw them score 4 runs on 4 hits.
Offensively, St. Louis was a juggernaut.  They scored in 6 separate innings.
 
Carpenter(2-1), allowing 2 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Armando
Galarraga(0-1) was the loser.  St. Louis scored big getting 7 runs off him in
5 innings.  
 
Carpenter was asked about his big strikeout performance, 'Well, it's a little
odd when you rack up these numbers on the road - instead of cheers and a
running tally in the stands, everything gets real still and quiet.  Just
strange - but it's nice to be able to take the crowd out of the game.'

April 11, 2011 Rays 2, Red Sox 1




Despite facing the powewerless Rays at Fenway, the Sox are held quiet and lose their third straight game by only scoring one run and grounding into three inning-ending doubleplays that could have easily changed the score. Why do I say powerless Rays? Including today's game, the Rays have a team batting average of only .168 and have scored 16 runs in their 10 games. Their leadoff hitter today, Sam Fuld, entered the game with a hitless season (0 for 22 so far this season). What does Fuld do? Leads off the game with a single, and steals second and third along with adding a single his next time up. How Tampa has won four of their last five games is beyond me.

hits on the night.

Doubront(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief.  He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings
giving up 1 hit and no walks.

Next to losing a no-hitter with two out in the 9th, this might be one of the worst ways to lose one . John Ely of the Dodgers was mowing the Padres down today, retiring the first 10 batters until walking Orlando Hudosn in the 4th. Ely stays at the one over the minumum mark until the 8th inning, when Ryan Ludwick leads off the inning by breaking up the no-hitter with a blast downtown. Goodbye no-hitter and shutout, all on the same pitch. Ely gets two more out, but then walks two straight hitters and is relieved. Still, 7 2/3 innings of one hit and 9 strikeout ball ain't too bad.

Center fielder Matt Kemp smacked 2 homeruns and John Ely didn't allow a hit
until the 8th inning as the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers bested the San Diego
Padres 6 to 1 at PETCO Park.
 
Kemp enjoyed a fine day at the plate.  He hit a bases-empty home run in the
4th inning, stroked a base-hit in the 6th inning and lofted a solo-blast
'downtown' in the 9th inning.  Los Angeles(NL) banged out 12 hits on the
afternoon.  
 
Ely(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 and 2/3 innings and allowing 1
run.  The right-handed Ely lost his chance for a no-hitter when Ryan Ludwick
homered with nobody out in the 8th inning.  Aaron Harang(0-1) was tagged with
the loss.
