| Two pitchers going in opposite directions take the hill today, Roy Halladay for the Phillies (2-0, 0.53 ERA) against the Nationals' John Lannan (0-2, 9.82). The game remains a tight 1-0 Phillie lead until Lannan is pinch hit for in the 6th, then the Phils open it up against the Nationals relievers. Not often you can see a pitchers ERA drop by almost four runs by allowing a run in 6 innings of work. Meanwhile, for Halladay he allows zero runs for the second straight start (he pitched a shutout his last time out) for the very impressive 0.36 ERA with only one run allowed through 25 innings of work so far. The loss drops the Nationals to 3-8 for the year, but doing a bit of research shows that they have historically been slow starters in real life especially since moving to Washington. They started 2-9 in 2004 (while still in Montreal), 2006 and 2007, started 3-8 in 2008 and now in 2011, and 1-10 in 2009. That 1-10 ties the worst start in franchice history set back in 1970, the Expos second season. |
